Finns traditionally enjoy a long, relaxing sauna on Christmas Eve. This ritual is considered sacred - it's believed that the sauna elf (saunatonttu) resides there and must be respected. Families cleanse themselves before the Christmas festivities, and in the past, it was also a time to remember deceased family members.
