La Quema del Diablo
π About This Tradition
On December 7th, Guatemalans participate in 'The Burning of the Devil' (La Quema del Diablo). People pile up garbage and unwanted items in front of their homes and set them on fire at 6 PM sharp to cleanse their homes of evil spirits before Christmas. Effigies of devils are burned, and fireworks light up the sky.
Did You Know?
The tradition started in colonial times and now entire neighborhoods coordinate massive bonfires!
